Alice: Computer Programming in a 3D World
March 18, 2008 by No One of Consequence
I have found yet another procrastination tool. I recently downloaded Alice, a 3D computer programming application courtesy of Carnegie Melon University. For any novice who has even a passing interest in programming, gaming or 3D animation this is certainly the program to start with. The tutorials can be completed in about an hour or less and although they do not run you through every feature of the program, it is enough to get you going on creating your own 3D world complete with characters, objects and animations.
I started with a simple animation of a snowman in a row boat. Through trial and error I managed to get his arms to reach for the oars and begin rowing the boat. The boat and snowman move forward together complete with splashing sound effects. The snowman eventually arrives on an island to meet up with castaway Mrs. Snowman and a bit of flirting begins. Eventually she will hijack the boat and leave Mr. Snowman stranded on the island. Here are a few screenshots:

Screenshot 1 is the best - looks very realistic with depth.
Great blog by the way.
Cheers.
This is pretty cool. I’m a computer programmer and I hope to have some free time someday to see what I can come up with. Thanks for posting this.
