24 Hour Short Story Contest

A NaNo friend of mine posted a link on our regional forum to WriterWeekly.com’s 24 Hour Short Story Contest. I’ve checked it out, read the rules and even read the winning short story from the Fall 2007 contest. Entry fee is $5 and the contest is limited to 500 participants. The Spring 2008 contest begins on April 26 at noon. Participants are emailed the topic and word count and submission is by email within that 24 hour period. There is a grand prize winner plus 84 other prizes to be awarded. I think I am going to give it try. Should be fun and I think not as intimidating as 50,000 words in 30 days. After all, NaNoWriMo writers average 1,600 to 1,700 words in a 24 hour period and the last winning story’s word count was 1,098. The challenge will be coming up with plot, character, story and a clever ending (they like clever endings at WritersWeekly) in 24 hours. I expect it will be a long night.
