I Want to Shoot My Day Job

be clever, be witty
be thoughtful, sublime
when composing a poem
make sure the words rhyme

shoot the main character
but don’t kill the plot
they won’t read your novel
for gunpowder and shot

toil and sweat
over each single word
a slave to my writing
my vision is blurred

worn and weary
first shower in days
now off to “work”
to the job that pays
