Flash Friday: Penny Dreadful’s 42 Lovely Words

rule42

John Tenniel’s original illustration Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

“Rule Forty-two. All persons more than a mile high to leave the court.”

― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

The King of Hearts proclaims that Rule Forty-two is the oldest rule in “the book.” The book, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, contains forty-two illustrations and the copyright expired forty-two years after publication. Haunted Waters Press editor, Penny Dreadful, is selecting exceptionally small works of flash fiction to be showcased in Penny Fiction, a regular feature of the literary journal, From the Depths.  Extra points will be awarded for entries with a connection to the Summer 2013 theme, and for those writers who adhere to the rules. Not really. There are no points. Just read the contest rules below and impress Penny with your ability to follow instructions.

“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”
-Ernest Hemingway (according to literary legend)

In honor of Hemingway’s original six word story, Haunted Waters Press editor, Penny Dreadful, is selecting exceptionally small works of flash fiction to be showcased in Penny Fiction, a regular feature of the literary journal, From the Depths.

As many of you are painfully aware, Penny is a stickler for the rules! She has been known to get snippy with those who break the email submission guidelines. However, she has agreed to allow visitors of Creative Procrastination to submit their entries here. For a limited time only!  I must have caught her on a good day! Or perhaps it was the promise of “likes” for her newly created Editor’s Page on Facebook. (hint hint) So, before she changes her mind–she can be quite unpredictable–please submit your six word story entries in the comments section below. Penny will be dropping by to read your entries. (I am certain she will be counting her Facebook likes as well!) Deadline is February 28th!

Here are the abbreviated Penny Fiction/Creative Procrastination submission guidelines:

  • Submit your original, unpublished six word story as a comment below.
  • Multiple entries okay. One is fine. Four is cool. Twenty is borderline obnoxious.
  • Include one interesting fact about yourself in under 13 words. No cut ‘n paste author bios. Undertakers and cat herders earn extra points. If we do not find you interesting, we reserve the right to make you appear more interesting.
  • Leave your Twitter handle, blog link or subscribe to the comments so Penny can contact you if your story is accepted.
  • Like Haunted Waters Press and Penny Dreadful on Facebook and follow us on Twitter: @Haunted_Waters and @PennyFiction (Not required, but it can’t hurt. But seriously, Penny needs to feel the love.)

Final Days To Submit!

HWP Header Cropped

From the Depths: Spring Issue 2013
Theme: Tributes
Media: Online/Electronic/Print
Publication Date: March 2013
Deadline: February 28, 2013

Haunted Waters Press is currently seeking works of prose, creative nonfiction and poetry for the Spring 2013 issue of our quarterly literary journal, From the Depths. We are looking for short stories of 3500 words or less, flash fiction of any length, creative nonfiction of 1500 words or less, and poetry. Selected works may also appear as part of our online literary content.

The Spring 2013 issue of From the Depths will feature works which pay tribute to someone who has touched the life of another. Think passionate testimonials to lovers, loved ones, friends and companions; or a simple acknowledgment of a teacher, neighbor, pastor or stranger. Share stories of extraordinary sacrifice, a life saved, or one small act with life altering consequences. Stretch the boundaries with faithful pets, places of the heart, or trinkets passed down through generations. As always, we seek writing that comes from the heart creating an emotional connection with our readers and poetry that is clear, meaningful and accessible. We look forward to reading your work!

Update: The editorial staff is in the process of selecting the final works to be included in the Spring 2013 issue of From the Depths, but there is still time to submit. In addition to the suggested topics above, we are still hoping for a tribute piece featuring a soldier’s story and perhaps one with a connection to 9-11. Submit your work today!

For full submission details visit the Haunted Waters Press Submissions page. Cheers!
